New Tai Yuen Restaurant

This is our first night in Australia. After a 17-hour flight from Los Angeles, my husband and I were pretty tired, so we didn't do much today. After taking a nap, we got our bearings and explored Chinatown, which was a few blocks away from our hotel, and had dinner at New Tai Yuen Restaurant.

My husband had the sizzling lamb.
I had the salt and pepper soft shelled crab, which was a bit
too salty, but which otherwise was very good.
And we shared some rice.

Asian Tao

After a doctor's appointment that ended at about lunchtime today, my husband and I stopped off at the nearby Asian Tao for lunch.

We started by sharing some salt and pepper squid.
We also shared some shrimp summer rolls.
I had pho with meatball, beef, and brisket.

Ocean Harbor

I'm in Philadelphia for the MLA Convention, and my husband was able to come with me (although he gets to enjoy some time off, as opposed to hearing some teaching nerds geek out). Our hotel is in North Philadelphia, and we're about half a mile away from Chinatown and the Reading Terminal Market, which means we'll be eating very well for the next few days. Tonight we went to Ocean Harbor for dinner. Apparently they're well-known for dim sum, but that might be a weekend thing because we ordered from the menu.

We shared the House Special Seafood Thick Soup.
The pan-friend dumplings were excellent - the best part
of the email.
My husband had some scallops.
He also had the chicken lo main. (He was hungry, apparently.)
I had a hot pot: diced steak with black pepper sauce. Pretty good!

Red Maple Chinese Restaurant

I met up with some teacher friends for dinner tonight; we met at Red Maple Chinese for dinner.

I started with some egg rolls.
One of my dining companions shared an extra lettuce wrap
with chicken with me.
I tried something new tonight, also: the sizzling house special,
which came with shrimp, scallop, chicken, beef, pork, and
squid with a variety of veggies in a house brown sauce.

Red Maple Chinese Restaurant

My husband professed a craving for the food from one of our favorite local restaurants, Red Maple Chinese Restaurant, so I placed an order for takeout this afternoon and my husband picked it up on his way home.

I tried the sour spicy shredded potato...
...and the sea bass in special lemongrass sauce.
My husband's standard order includes General Tso's chicken.
He also ordered the ham fried rice...
...and the Shanghai noodles, because he was very hungry.

Red Maple Chinese Restaurant

This being Valentine's Day, my husband and I decided to go out to dinner. We didn't make reservations anywhere, and went looking for a casual dinner out, settling at the previously visited Red Maple Chinese Restaurant. Even without reservations, we only had to wait perhaps 15 minutes. We did order quite a bit - but figured that even though we were hungry, whatever we didn't eat could be brought home (we managed to eat a few bites of our entrees before asking for boxes for all the leftovers).

Appetizer #1: We started out with pot stickers.

Appetizer #2: We tried something new - Shanghai juicy buns.

appetizer #3: more dumplings, in the form of deep fried
shrimp dumplings

appetizer #4: salt pepper calamari and shrimp

My husband ordered two entrees; this is shrimp lo mein.
He also ordered General Tso's chicken.
I ordered the Singapore rice noodle, which was good, but spicy,
even for my taste.

Grande Secolo

My husband and I did our last load of laundry while we're here in Rome, and since we had finished doing such glamorous work at about lunchtime, we stopped into Grande Secolo, a Chinese restaurant a few doors down from the laundromat. The food was excellent (and probably only partly due to our needing a break from so much Italian food).

I started with soup with chicken and shrimp.
We shared some egg rolls with chicken.
I forget the name of these particular dumplings, but they
were fantastic - almost like they were steamed with ginger.
My husband ordered the chicken curry, but I ordered a beef
dish with a red sauce.
My husband ordered an ice cream tiramisu concoction.
I ordered a gelato fritto -
fried ice cream (cream flavored ice cream).
This is what it looked like on the inside.

Best Wok Sushi Bar

My husband and I tried a new restaurant tonight: The Best Wok Sushi Bar, which serves both Chinese and Japanese cuisine. It's only recently opened, so we thought we'd give it a try. We were glad we went, although we weren't sure we'd want to go back; the service was very good, but the food didn't blow us away - a different local restaurant serves better sushi, we feel, and another has a better selection of Chinese food.

My husband had the sashimi salad.
We shared an order of fish tempura.

the Best Wok roll (spicy salmon, shrimp tempura, cream
cheese, avocado, eel, crabmeat, masago)

the Godzilla roll
(shrimp tempura, crabmeat, toped with eel and avocado)

the tsunami roll (fried scallop, cramped, topped
with tuna, salmon, masago, and lemon)

the Boston roll
(baby lobster, avocado, topped with albacore tuna)
tuna roll
eel nigiri
spicy crawfish nigiri
(this didn't really work too well; it was dry)

Red Maple Chinese Restaurant

I've visited Red Maple before, and have been developing a hankering for it. My husband was kind enough to take me there for dinner tonight. (We may have gotten a few too many appetizers, but they were all so good.)

appetizer: wonton soup for two

appetizer: pot stickers (very large ones at that)
appetizer: egg rolls with sweet and sour dipping sauce
appetizer: deep fried shrimp dumplings
my entree: BBQ duck (half a duck)

my husband's entree: General Tso's chicken

China Star

Tonight's dinner with my husband and my father-in-law was at China Star.

Appetizers included an egg roll, beef teriyaki,
and crab rangoon.

Also an appetizer: the hot and spicy chicken wings.

my entree: half a Peking duck

The duck came with pancakes and plum sauce.
